The annual Salsa on St. Clair event came to an unexpected halt following a tragic incident of violence that led to the cancellation of its final day.
Organizers took to Instagram to announce that the festival would not be continuing on Sunday, citing ongoing police investigations at the venue. The decision came in the wake of a fatal double-shooting that occurred during the festival, leaving two individuals dead and several others injured.
Toronto Police disclosed that the incident took place on Saturday evening in the vicinity of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, with approximately 13,000 attendees present at the festival. The exchange of gunfire resulted in one fatality at the scene, while another victim succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Additionally, at least four individuals sustained serious gunshot wounds.
As of the latest update, authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the violence.
Various political figures, including Mayor Olivia Chow, Coun. Mike Colle, and Premier Doug Ford, expressed dismay and condemnation over the incident. Mayor Chow denounced the violence as a reckless act that jeopardized the safety of families and individuals gathered at the festival. Colle highlighted the impact of such “gangster violence” on community events and called for stringent action against the perpetrators. Premier Ford echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need for apprehending those responsible and ensuring they face severe consequences.
The Hillcrest Village Business Improvement Area, representing numerous local businesses, conveyed its sorrow over the shooting, emphasizing the tragic turn of events at an event meant to celebrate culture and unity.
