“Exploding E-Bike Battery Ignites Blaze, Hospitalizing Three in Scarborough Incident”

Firefighters issue warning after Lithium-Ion Battery Sparks High-Rise Fire
In a recent incident at a high-rise building in Scarborough, fire officials are emphasizing the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. The fire broke out early Sunday morning on Lawrence Avenue East and Morningside Avenue, prompting a swift response from fire crews who were faced with heavy smoke on the building’s second floor.

Although five individuals from the unit where the fire originated left the scene before receiving medical evaluation, three others from nearby units were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Fire chief Jim Jessop identified a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike as the source of the fire, underscoring the potential dangers posed by these batteries in causing rapid fire outbreaks.

According to Jessop, incidents involving e-bike batteries can escalate quickly, emitting toxic smoke and creating significant hazards for both residents and firefighters. This serves as a reminder of the importance of handling and storing lithium-ion batteries with caution to prevent such incidents.
