Today, wildland firefighters in British Columbia are deploying “heavy helicopter bucketing” to contain a raging blaze near Boston Bar and prevent it from spreading east towards Merritt, an area inaccessible to ground crews.
The Brunswick complex of wildfires, spanning 189 square kilometers to the south, has already led to evacuation orders and alerts for numerous homes in the region, located approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. Meanwhile, the French Bar Creek wildfire in the Thompson Nicola Regional District has caused fresh evacuation alerts for properties north of Lillooet.
Challenges faced by firefighting crews include difficult terrain, limited water sources, and restricted access to the fire sites. The BC Wildfire Service emphasizes the complexities of battling the 12-square-kilometer French Bar Creek blaze due to these factors.
Despite increasing temperatures and decreasing humidity levels, the forecast predicts lighter winds that could assist in firefighting efforts. However, the dry forest conditions raise concerns for potential escalation in fire behavior during hot and dry weather periods.
Efforts are underway to reinforce containment lines near Boothroyd while evaluating the need for structure protection along Highway 8 connecting Merritt to Spences Bridge. An evacuation alert affecting 61 properties near Merritt remains in place as precautionary measures continue.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has issued an evacuation alert for residents near Anarchist Mountain due to the K50824 wildfire, which was discovered recently and is currently under control. With about 23 active wildfires in B.C., six of them are categorized as out of control.
