Proposed Maximum Sentence for 15-Year-Old in Shocking Murder of Cherished Pickering Senior

Crown and defense lawyers have united in a joint plea to an Ontario court, advocating for the maximum youth sentence for a teenager who admitted to the first-degree murder of an adored 83-year-old woman outside her Pickering residence in 2025.

During a recent session at an Oshawa court, both parties urged Justice Lisa Wannamaker to impose the highest allowable sentence of 10 years under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They also recommended a lifetime ban on weapons, submission of DNA to a national registry, and forfeiture of seized evidence as part of the Durham Regional Police investigation.

The 15-year-old, who was 14 at the time of the tragic incident involving Eleanor Doney and cannot be named due to legal provisions, expressed remorse in court. He acknowledged the severity of his actions, stating, “I am deeply sorry,” and emphasized his desire to learn from the experience and rebuild his life.

The court was informed of the teen’s medical history, with reports highlighting his serious mental health challenges and the need for extensive rehabilitative interventions.

Deputy Crown attorney Tammy D’eri argued for a six-year custodial sentence followed by four years of intense supervision and community treatment, citing the ongoing risk of reoffending. Defense attorney Erin Dann proposed a five-year custody term plus four years in the community, underscoring the gravity of the offense and the teen’s commitment to rehabilitation.

The sentencing decision by Justice Wannamaker is anticipated in an upcoming hearing.
