Quebec Battles Surge in Parasitic Infections Triggering Diarrhea Outbreaks

Quebec is currently experiencing a rise in intestinal parasite infections, leading to severe cases of diarrhea. Dr. Mitch Shulman, an emergency medicine expert, shared insights on this concerning trend during an interview with CityNews.

During this time of year, it is crucial to be mindful of the factors contributing to this increase. One major reason is the prevalence of camping activities, where individuals may unknowingly expose themselves to contaminated water sources or improperly prepared food. Additionally, the ongoing barbecue season poses risks if food is not handled and cooked correctly. Dr. Shulman emphasizes the importance of proper food handling practices, such as keeping raw foods separate from cooked ones, and maintaining good hand hygiene before and after food preparation and bathroom use.

Importantly, the influx of produce from other countries also raises concerns about contamination. Properly washing and preparing fruits and vegetables is essential to reduce the risk of infection. Dr. Shulman advises rinsing fruits like grapes and blueberries under running water for a minute, while recommending a vinegar and water solution soak for produce with crevices like raspberries.

Above all, consistent handwashing is highlighted as a critical preventive measure. Ensuring hands are washed thoroughly after handling raw foods, cleaning utensils, and separating cooked and uncooked food items is essential for reducing the spread of harmful pathogens.
