Rachel Renaud, a passionate advocate for justice following the tragic death of her sister Gabie Renaud, has announced her candidacy for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) in the upcoming fall elections.
Last year, Gabie Renaud fell victim to domestic violence, allegedly at the hands of her partner with a troubling history of abuse. In response to this heartbreaking incident, the National Assembly passed the Gabie Renaud Law in June, a significant step towards addressing domestic violence in Quebec.
Rachel Renaud, who played a pivotal role in championing this legislation, expressed her satisfaction at the unanimous approval of the law on June 11. In a press statement, she shared her admiration for Premier and CAQ Leader Christine Fréchette, emphasizing her commitment to making a positive impact through politics.
Renaud’s candidacy will focus on the newly formed riding of Bellefeuille, spanning the Laurentians and Lanaudière region, leveraging her expertise in human resources management. Meanwhile, Fréchette highlighted her administration’s dedication to combating violence against women, citing the recent legislative milestones like the Gabie Renaud Law and the Clare Law.
The journey towards enacting the “Gabie Renaud Law” was a collaborative effort that saw Quebec solidaire advocating for its adoption, drawing inspiration from Clare’s Law in England. Fréchette, recognizing the urgency of addressing domestic violence, incorporated the law into her policy agenda during her leadership campaign.
