Quebec’s Iconic OKA Cheese Brand to Join French Dairy Giant
One of Quebec’s oldest culinary treasures, the beloved OKA cheese brand, is embarking on a new journey across the Atlantic to France. Agropur, the Quebec dairy co-operative that has nurtured OKA for 130 years, recently announced the sale of its fine cheese division to Lactalis, a prominent French dairy firm.
This strategic move by Agropur signifies a shift in focus towards milk production, industrial cheese, butter, and other dairy products. As part of the deal, Lactalis will not only acquire the renowned OKA brand but also take ownership of other Quebec-made favorites such as Monsieur Gustav and L’Extra, along with two production facilities.
However, the acquisition is pending approval by federal regulators, adding a layer of anticipation to the transition. If the sale is finalized, Lactalis, known for brands like Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond, and Lactantia, will expand its presence on grocery store shelves, enriching the dairy offerings available to consumers.
