“Quebec Watchdog Investigates Explosive Racism Claims in Montréal-Nord Police Force”

Quebec’s Police Ethics Commissioner Investigates Allegations of Racism in Montreal Neighborhood

The Police Ethics Commissioner of Quebec has initiated a probe into claims of racist behavior by officers in a diverse Montreal community. Acting upon a request from Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière, the investigation was launched on June 26.

Following an announcement by Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher on June 12, where 16 officers were relieved of patrol duties due to allegations of discriminatory conduct, including two facing suspension and criminal scrutiny, the situation has garnered significant attention.

In response, a spokesperson for Minister Lafrenière indicated that he would refrain from additional comments until the investigation progresses. The Red Coalition, an advocacy group dedicated to combating racial profiling, had lodged a complaint with the ethics commissioner, a move that preceded Lafrenière’s formal request for investigation by ten days.

Correspondence from the ethics commissioner to the Red Coalition’s Alain Babineau, which was reviewed by The Canadian Press, indicated that the organization’s file was closed following Lafrenière’s intervention.
