A rising star in the hockey world, Simon Wang, is breaking barriers as the highest drafted Chinese-born player in NHL history. Hailing from China, Wang’s journey to success began in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Expressing his gratitude, Wang shared with OMNI News, “It means the world to me, to my family, to what I put into hockey, and to hockey back home in China.”
Starting his hockey career at the age of four in Beijing, Wang moved to Toronto at 12, immersing himself in the competitive hockey scene in Ontario. His hard work paid off when he was selected as the 33rd overall pick by the San Jose Sharks in the 2025 NHL draft.
While Wang has yet to sign an official contract with the Sharks, he has been training with the team as a prospect, rubbing shoulders with top NHL players and gaining valuable experience in the professional hockey world.
Reflecting on his training experience, Wang expressed, “It’s definitely special training with NHL guys every day. It definitely motivates me every day.”
Standing tall at six feet six inches, Wang honed his skills playing for the Oshawa Generals and the Niagara IceDogs in the OHL, where his standout performances set him apart from his peers.
Toronto holds a special place in Wang’s heart, not just as the city where his hockey dream took flight but also as his second home, shaping him both as a player and as a person.
Looking towards the future, Wang shared his plans to attend Boston University in the fall to further develop his hockey skills in the NCAA before making the leap to professional hockey.
As Wang continues to make history in the hockey world, his journey is only just beginning.
