The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is set to honor a remarkable fan with a special tribute.
Barbara Jean Batten, an 81-year-old lifelong supporter of the CNE, will receive the inaugural golden ticket on Friday, Aug. 28. This exclusive pass signifies her unwavering dedication to the annual event, which she has attended every year without fail since her birth in 1939. The prestigious award will be presented to her at the Princes’ Gates during a ceremony scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
Hailing from Toronto and Scarborough but now residing in Bracebridge, Batten’s connection to the CNE runs deep. Her attendance streak of 75 consecutive years dates back to 1945, with her family’s involvement in the fair stretching back even further to the 1930s when her father excelled in music competitions, earning accolades that are still cherished by the family.
As the eldest of four siblings, Batten has turned her annual visits to the CNE into a beloved family tradition. She holds dear memories of attending with her late sister Donna, who wished for one last visit to the fair surrounded by loved ones.
The CNE officials were moved by Batten’s lifelong commitment and decided to introduce the golden ticket in her honor. This special pass will grant her access to the fair for years to come, symbolizing her integral role in the CNE community.
Mark Holland, the CEO of CNE, expressed gratitude for patrons like Batten who embody the spirit of the fair. He highlighted the significance of introducing the golden ticket to celebrate individuals like her who have made the CNE a part of their lives for over half a century.
Following the presentation of the golden ticket, Batten intends to relish in the familiar delights of the fair, starting with watching her favorite show, SuperDogs, and then immersing herself in the festive atmosphere that has captivated her for eight decades.
