A beloved outdoor school in Langley faces closure just before the start of the school year. Langley Forest School (LFS) has been a cherished learning haven for kids across the Lower Mainland, using a section of Williams Park as their unconventional classroom.
Unfortunately, the school received news from Fraser Health Authority that their license has expired due to not using their indoor facility for 12 straight months. Despite having operated under this arrangement for more than a decade, recent changes in requirements have left the school unable to continue its operation.
Carol LaJeunesse, the school president, expressed frustration and disappointment at the sudden turn of events, leading to the school’s closure. Cindy Reed, an outdoor educator at LFS for five years, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of outdoor education for both her and the children.
The closure not only affects the dedicated staff, including Reed, who are facing job losses, but also impacts 32 childcare spaces, leaving families in a difficult situation. Parents, like Ashley Lindbo, whose son benefited greatly from the inclusive program at LFS, are now left searching for alternatives.
Despite the challenges, the school remains determined to find a way forward and continue providing outdoor education to its students. While awaiting a response from Fraser Health, the focus is on securing a permanent solution to ensure that the children can continue their unique learning experience outside the traditional classroom setting.
