LaSalle College in Montreal is set to resume classes after a Quebec Superior Court ruling compelled the provincial government to reinstate its funding through the 2026–27 academic year. The decision, made on Thursday, ensures that the college will receive the necessary financial support, enabling it to continue its operations.
Following a week-long suspension of classes, approximately 3,000 students and 421 faculty members can now breathe a sigh of relief as the school gears up to kickstart the fall semester. The reinstated funding, valued at around $31 million, paves the way for the college to restore its programs and services.
The recent turmoil stemmed from the college exceeding Quebec’s English-language enrollment limit, resulting in a hefty $30 million penalty and subsequent cessation of government subsidies. Calls from students, educators, and union representatives prompted a legal battle, ultimately leading to the court’s favorable ruling.
Although the immediate threat of closure has been averted, LaSalle College is not yet in the clear. The institution must address the outstanding penalty and enter negotiations with the Quebec government to resolve the matter.
