Over the weekend, a hiker was injured during a bear encounter near Conflict Lake in the picturesque Callaghan Conservancy.
The incident occurred on Friday evening when a trio of hikers came face to face with two bears in the tranquil surroundings. One of the bears attacked one of the hikers before eventually backing off.
Swift action was taken as the COS Predator Attack Team, in collaboration with Squamish RCMP and Squamish Search and Rescue, swiftly arrived at the scene via helicopter.
Upon arrival, a thorough safety check was carried out, leading to the discovery of an adult male black bear at the location of the attack. Due to concerns for public safety, conservation officers made the difficult decision to euthanize the bear.
The injured hiker was promptly given first aid before being airlifted to a hospital. Fortunately, the COS reported that her injuries were not life-threatening.
The investigation extended into Saturday as conservation officers combed the area once more. The authorities are yet to confirm whether the euthanized black bear was the one involved in the incident or if it was the second bear. Additionally, there is uncertainty surrounding the species of the attacking bear, with questions remaining about whether it was a black bear or a grizzly bear.
For now, trail access in the vicinity has been closed as the investigation unfolds, with warning signs now in place at various entry points.
