Toronto Centre, the city’s smallest yet densely populated ward, is gearing up for a hotly contested election battle between incumbent councillor Chris Moise and political newcomer Curran Stikuts, a former director of advocacy at the 519 Community Centre.
Bordered by prominent streets like Bay, College, Yonge, and Dundas in the west, Toronto Centre has a history of pressing issues including homelessness, drug use, and public safety concerns, according to Moise. Over the past four years, Moise claims to have made strides in addressing these challenges, citing a reduction in encampments and initiatives to support marginalized residents while ensuring the community’s overall safety.
However, Stikuts, one of the challengers, argues that more coordinated efforts are needed to tackle the disparities within the ward, particularly in housing. With major endorsements from figures like former councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and support for transparency and accountability, Stikuts is positioning himself as a catalyst for change in Toronto Centre.
With a total of 11 candidates vying for the Ward 13 councillor seat, issues like transit, policing, and green space are at the forefront of the election discourse. While Moise emphasizes his experience and accomplishments, challengers like Stikuts and Daniel Tate advocate for fresh perspectives and increased accountability in local governance.
