Toronto, GTA Citizens Demand More Police Presence Without Raising Costs, Reveals Survey

A recent survey conducted by Canada Pulse Insights for CityNews reveals that a majority of Toronto and Greater Toronto Area (GTA) residents desire more police officers on the streets but are hesitant to increase police budgets. The poll found that 73% of Torontonians and 76% of GTA residents agree that there should be a higher police presence in their communities. However, 59% of Toronto residents and 60% of GTA residents prefer to maintain current levels of police funding.

The survey highlights a divide among residents who seek increased police visibility due to concerns about escalating violence, yet are reluctant to incur additional costs for policing services. John Wright, CEO of Canada Pulse Insights, notes that while people want more police presence, they are adamant about not wanting to pay more for it until they see tangible results.

Moreover, the poll indicates that a significant percentage of respondents feel that too many repeat offenders are being granted bail, with 87% of Toronto residents and 91% of GTA residents expressing this sentiment. Additionally, fear of violence on public transit is prevalent, particularly in Toronto, where 63% of respondents admit to being afraid of encountering violence while using public transportation.

The survey’s findings underscore the intersection of public safety concerns, policing effectiveness, and budget considerations in the minds of Toronto and GTA residents. The importance of these issues is reflected in another recent survey that ranked crime, policing, and public safety as the second most critical challenges facing Toronto, following affordability and the cost of living.
