“Quebec Separatists Break Ranks with Alberta Over Independence Referendum”

With the upcoming referendum in Alberta focusing on the province’s independence, Quebec sovereigntists are cautious about aligning with Alberta separatists. The referendum question, the tenth out of ten, asks whether Alberta should stay in Canada or proceed with a legal process for a binding separation vote. Early voting started on Tuesday and continues until Saturday.

Quebecers may find parallels with their past referendums, particularly in 1980 and 1995, where the majority voted against independence.

Marie-Anne Alepin, president of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal, a prominent Quebec nationalist group, sees a significant difference between Alberta’s push for independence and Quebec’s historical sovereignty efforts. She believes Alberta’s referendum is more about leveraging power in negotiations with the federal government rather than a genuine desire for independence.

Despite some common cause claims, many Quebec sovereigntists do not fully support Alberta separatists. Former Parti Québécois leaders express skepticism about Alberta’s independence movement, highlighting the fundamental differences in motivations between Quebec and Alberta sovereigntists.
