Amid Mixed Feelings, Torontonians Express Concerns Over Housing Affordability
A recent survey conducted by Canada Pulse Insights for CityNews reveals that Torontonians have mixed opinions about the state of housing affordability in their community. While there is a perception of slight improvement, a significant portion still holds negative views.
The survey found that 67% of Torontonians rated access to affordable homes for purchase in their community as bad or terrible, down from 83% in the previous year. When it came to affordable rentals, 62% shared similar sentiments, indicating room for improvement.
In Toronto, 60% of residents are homeowners, 34% rent, and 6% have alternative housing arrangements. Interestingly, nearly three-quarters of non-owners expressed pessimism about ever owning a home, citing financial constraints as a primary barrier.
The survey also shed light on perceptions of Toronto’s housing plan, with 40% giving it a low grade. Despite housing prices dipping, first-time homeowners continue to face challenges in entering the market, as stated by Karen Chapple, Director of the University of Toronto School of Cities.
Beyond housing, Torontonians also face financial strains in other areas, with groceries being the top concern for 61% of respondents. The rising cost of living has led 71% to cut back on personal expenses, with entertainment being the most commonly sacrificed category.
Chapple emphasized the need for higher incomes to address the affordability crisis, highlighting the importance of earning a livable wage. She noted that despite some increases in income, it is insufficient to offset the rapid rise in housing costs.
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) mirrors similar concerns, with 79% of non-owners expressing doubts about owning a home. Residents in the GTA also prioritize affordability, with groceries being a major financial burden for 69% of respondents.
Overall, the survey underscores the pressing need for addressing housing affordability and improving financial stability for residents in Toronto and the GTA.
