Albertans Eagerly Await Referendum Results as Polling Station Delays Occur

As Albertans eagerly awaited the results of Monday night’s referendum, delays surfaced at a polling station in Edmonton’s Glenora neighborhood. A school-based polling station experienced issues, leading to a two-hour delay in closing time, ultimately causing a ripple effect across the province.

“Elections Alberta explained that unofficial results will be released once all voting locations in the province are confirmed closed,” causing a holdup in result announcements.

One of the 106 polling stations across Alberta faced the delay, with closing times extended up to 10 p.m. due to various issues that had been resolved by Elections Alberta. Voters were urged to remain patient and considerate towards the hard-working staff.

At Westminster School in Glenora, the polling station opened as scheduled at 9 a.m., but had to briefly close for reconfiguration, causing a delay in voting. Alberta spokesperson Michelle Gurney confirmed that the hours of the late-opening locations would be extended.

Several voters, including Lisa Sankeralli and Brian Webb, shared their experiences of waiting for hours due to setup issues, impacting voter turnout at the affected station. Despite delays at some locations, many electors confirmed a smooth and quick voting process.

A total of 1.3 million Albertans had already cast their votes through mail or advanced polls, with encouraging reports from voters in Calgary as well. City Mayor Jeromy Farkas urged those who hadn’t voted yet to take the opportunity to make their voices heard.

The referendum comprised nine questions on immigration and the Constitution, including a crucial query on whether Albertans wished to stay in Canada or pursue a binding referendum on leaving. The complex nature of the questions raised concerns among voters like Justina Paradis, who felt they were deliberately intricate.

As Albertans eagerly awaited the referendum results, delays at polling stations highlighted the importance of exercising the right to vote and shaping the future of the province.
