“Montreal Metro to Undergo Massive Escalator Overhaul: STM to Replace 58 Units Citywide”

The Montreal Metro system is embarking on a significant upgrade plan, as the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) recently announced its intention to replace 58 aging escalators by 2031. These escalators, which are currently part of the 298-unit network, are reaching an average age of 40 years and are in need of modernization.

The replacement project will unfold across 17 metro stations, with Jean-Talon station being the first in line to receive new escalators. According to STM officials, this initiative is vital to enhance the metro experience for passengers by reducing breakdowns, improving overall accessibility, and increasing efficiency within stations.

To facilitate the replacement process, one escalator at Jean-Talon station will be out of service until 2032 to allow for training of maintenance staff. The upcoming schedule includes escalator replacements at stations such as Iberville, Outremont, McGill, Acadie, Castelnau, and Côte-Vertu in 2028, followed by Peel station in 2029.

Additionally, an expansion of the Blue Line will see 39 escalators installed as part of a larger procurement deal valued at $200 million, further contributing to the modernization efforts of the Montreal Metro system.
