“B.C. Emerges as Flu Hotspot as Season Hits Full Swing”

Health Canada reports that the flu season is hitting earlier than usual this year, with British Columbia seeing a surge in flu cases nationwide. The data indicates that flu activity in B.C. is currently at a moderate level, surpassing all other provinces.

Influenza A is identified as the dominant strain, with over 4,700 cases recorded in Canada since late August. Although the elderly population over 65 is the most affected by the flu, Health Canada’s findings reveal that influenza B is impacting individuals aged 20 to 44.

Aidan Moghaddas, a pharmacist at Shoppers Drug Mart in Surrey, emphasizes the importance of getting the annual flu vaccine as the most effective measure against the flu. He highlights that influenza A constitutes more than 80% of the current cases and encourages early vaccination to allow the body to build immunity.

Apart from vaccination, key preventative steps against the flu include regular handwashing, proper hydration, a balanced diet, and physical activity. Moghaddas advises on the significance of maintaining clean surfaces at home to prevent the spread of the virus, noting its survival for up to 48 hours on various materials.

Emphasizing that prevention is superior to treatment, Moghaddas urges the public to take responsibility for their health and the well-being of others. He suggests booking flu vaccination appointments promptly to safeguard not only oneself but also vulnerable individuals and reduce the strain on healthcare resources.

It is recommended for individuals aged six months and above to receive the flu shot. British Columbia has initiated flu shot availability throughout the province, with numerous pharmacies offering convenient access to vaccinations.
