The completion of the Annacis Water Supply Tunnel marks a significant achievement in providing clean drinking water to communities south of the Fraser River for generations to come.
Deep below the river’s surface, a tunnel boring machine named “Anna” has finished excavating the new 2.3-kilometre tunnel linking Surrey and New Westminster.
Moving forward, the next phase involves the installation of a robust pipe over two-and-a-half meters wide, designed to withstand seismic activity and capable of transporting around 600 million liters of water daily.
Murray Gant, Metro Vancouver’s tunnelling director, emphasized the importance of the project’s durability, stating, “These water tunnels are designed to last at least a century, potentially even longer, with enhanced seismic resilience to ensure continuous drinking water supply in the face of major disasters.”
Initiated in 2022 with a $450 million budget, this essential infrastructure endeavor has received praise for its adherence to timelines and financial plans.
Mayor John McEwen of Anmore commended the project, saying, “This successful execution demonstrates Metro Vancouver’s commitment to efficient and effective project management.”
While the completion of the tunnel is scheduled for 2028, connecting it to the existing water system will enhance service for close to a million households.
