“Public Health Alert: Unregulated Home-Based Food Vendors on the Rise in Lower Mainland!”

British Columbia’s health authorities are warning the public against purchasing food from unlicensed operations following a surge in reports about unauthorized food services in the Lower Mainland area.

According to the Fraser Health Authority, these operations are running out of makeshift kitchens in homes, garages, and other unconventional spaces, raising concerns about potential health hazards stemming from improper food handling, storage, and preparation.

The unlicensed services offered range from catering and traditional “tiffin” meals popular in the South Asian community to takeout options, ready-to-eat deliveries, and even small bakeries.

The health authority emphasizes the importance of sourcing food only from licensed establishments that have undergone thorough inspections by health officials, with visible permits for customer reassurance.

Fraser Health highlights the serious health risks associated with consuming food from unregulated businesses, including the potential for foodborne illnesses like E. coli and hepatitis.

Covering a population of over two million individuals across 20 municipalities, Fraser Health encourages the public to prioritize safety by choosing licensed food providers.
