Metro Vancouver, a vibrant and diverse region, showcases a range of political views. An exclusive poll conducted for CityNews sheds light on how residents in the area feel about key provincial issues.
The Canada Pulse Insights report compared political sentiments in the City of Vancouver with those of residents across Metro Vancouver. Surprisingly, when it comes to perceptions of NDP Premier David Eby, there is a striking similarity in opinion. A significant 54% of city residents believe he is performing well, mirroring the 55% approval rate among those in the rest of Metro Vancouver.
The findings reveal a nearly even split across the region when participants were asked if Eby should be reelected (49%) or if it is time for a change (51%).
Sanjay Jeram, chair of the political science department at Simon Fraser University, noted, “Historically, Vancouver has been more favorable towards the NDP, especially compared to areas further from the urban core. However, recent shifts in dynamics, with the BC Liberals less active, suggest a potential realignment in public sentiment.”
Jeram pointed out that with the BC Conservatives facing challenges in leadership and party cohesion, some traditional conservative voters may find themselves with limited options, potentially leading them to support Eby, even if reluctantly.
The poll also delved into opinions on BC Ferries’ overseas shipbuilding contract for new vessels. Despite concerns raised by Premier Eby about potential costs and delays, a majority in both the City of Vancouver (75%) and the rest of Metro Vancouver (71%) believe the contract should proceed, even if the ships are constructed in China.
