Vancouver City Councillor Eyes Mayor’s Chair in Potential Political Shake-Up

With just under a year until the upcoming municipal election in Vancouver, there is speculation about another city councillor potentially running for mayor.

Vancouver Green Party Councilor Pete Fry is hinting at a possible mayoral bid without confirming his decision, although his party has completed the necessary paperwork for his candidacy.

Fry emphasizes the importance of thoughtful consideration before committing to a mayoral campaign, expressing confidence in potential support but also acknowledging the need to assess the political landscape, particularly in relation to other candidates like Ken Sim from the ABC Vancouver Party.

As the sole Green Party representative on the council, Fry is deliberating whether a mayoral run would jeopardize his current position, considering his effectiveness as a councillor and commitment to serving the residents of Vancouver.

A final decision on Fry’s potential mayoral candidacy is expected in the new year, amidst already declared candidacies from former ABC Councilor Rebecca Bligh and Ken Sim’s former chief of staff Kareem Allam for the election scheduled on Oct. 17, 2026.
