Turn Back Time: Daylight Saving Ends This Weekend!

As Canadians prepare to “fall back” this Sunday, they will gain an extra hour of sleep while bidding farewell to brighter evenings. The end of Daylight Saving Time on Nov. 2 means clocks will turn back at 2 a.m., adjusting sunrise and sunset times across the country.

While the debate on the biannual clock change persists, most provinces, including B.C., will follow the tradition this year. Only Saskatchewan remains on standard time throughout the year, avoiding the time shift.

Originally introduced during the First World War to save energy, Daylight Saving Time has become a familiar practice in Canada. Despite the changing landscape of energy conservation, supporters argue that longer summer evenings promote outdoor activities and boost economic sectors like retail and tourism.

However, critics highlight the drawbacks, including disruptions to sleep patterns, road safety concerns due to darker commutes, and potential impacts on mental health and workplace productivity.

As some provinces consider permanent time changes, the current system remains in place for now, with British Columbians continuing to adjust their clocks twice a year.
