Former Water Scientist Claims Denial of Defense Rights in Espionage Case

A former Hydro-Québec researcher is on trial for economic espionage, claiming innocence and expressing shock over his arrest. Yuesheng Wang, facing accusations of sharing confidential research with Chinese entities, testified that he was seeking job opportunities abroad due to job difficulties and uncertainties about his future in Quebec. Wang denied disclosing any confidential information and emphasized his commitment to Hydro-Québec’s projects.

Wang, who worked at Hydro’s Center of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage from 2016 to 2022, highlighted language barriers, management tensions, and lack of resources as reasons for considering job prospects elsewhere. He defended his job applications in China as legitimate, aiming for a full professorship role.

Despite facing multiple charges, including economic espionage, Wang asserted his loyalty to Hydro-Québec and denied any clandestine collaboration with Chinese institutions. He expressed surprise over his suspension and subsequent dismissal, emphasizing his willingness to discuss the situation with his superiors.

As the trial continues, Wang’s testimony sheds light on his perspective and challenges during his tenure at Hydro-Québec.
