A legal battle has erupted in Quebec as family doctors challenge a new law that links physician compensation to performance metrics. The federation representing family doctors filed for judicial review, seeking to halt the implementation of Bill 2 until a full hearing can take place. This law, in effect since October 25, ties doctors’ salaries to the number of patients they treat and their level of vulnerability. The federation argues that the law has already caused significant negative impacts, driving some doctors to leave Quebec, opt for early retirement, or seek opportunities in the private sector.
Expressing concerns on social media, the federation cautioned that the law could lead to clinic closures, putting the public’s access to essential healthcare at risk. Notably, other medical federations and associations in Quebec, including those representing specialists, residents, and pharmacy owners, have also initiated legal challenges against this controversial legislation.
