“Ontario Launches Monumental $26.8 Billion Nuclear Revamp in Pickering to Power the Future”

Ontario has greenlit a $26.8 billion plan to extend the lifespan of four reactors at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station by nearly four decades. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce announced the approval of Ontario Power Generation’s refurbishment plan, which aims to kick off in early 2027 pending Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s nod.

Previously, a short extension for units 5 to 8 at the plant had been authorized until the end of 2026. Lecce highlighted that the project is forecasted to generate over 30,000 jobs during refurbishment and sustain 6,700 positions post-refurbishment, while also contributing to economic growth and meeting the province’s escalating electricity demands.

However, environmental groups like Environmental Defence caution that the temporary shutdown of Pickering’s reactors will heighten Ontario’s reliance on natural gas for power generation, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions.
