Quebec Health Crisis Looms as Key Laboratory Staff Announce Strike Plans This Week

Healthcare Professionals to Strike at National Public Health Lab in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue

Healthcare professionals at the National Public Health Laboratory in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue are set to go on strike for three days starting this Wednesday. The strike action by the Quebec Public Health Laboratory Professionals Union, which represents non-physician university graduates, comes after the expiration of their collective agreement on March 31, 2023.

Scheduled to commence at 00:01 on Tuesday night and conclude at 23:59 on Friday, the strike will impact the critical services provided by the Laboratory. These services include infectious disease management, infection surveillance, biosecurity, research, and other vital functions.

While an agreement on essential services during the strike has been reached between the employer and the union, the Administrative Labour Tribunal has outlined specific circumstances under which certain professionals may be called back to work, such as validating urgent analysis reports or providing immediate treatment-related information requested by physicians.

The strike is a result of ongoing negotiations and disagreements between the union and the employer. Despite the potential disruption, both parties are working to ensure minimal impact on essential healthcare services during the strike period.
