Montreal Transforms Historic Hôtel-Dieu Hospital into Lifesaving Warming Center Amidst Freezing Temperatures

As the winter chill descends, the City of Montreal is stepping up to offer warmth and shelter to those in need. A temporary warming shelter has been set up at the former Hôtel-Dieu hospital site, welcoming up to 50 individuals each night for a cozy respite, rest, and a snack.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed the city’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable residents during the winter months through the swift establishment of this shelter. She highlighted the collaborative efforts of the crisis team in providing not just a warm space but also respectful and compassionate support to those experiencing homelessness.

In addition to the Hôtel-Dieu site, more warming centres will soon open in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie and Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve from mid-December until March 31. Last week, a temporary emergency shelter was also launched at the YMCA Centre-Ville, further expanding the city’s efforts to ensure the well-being of all residents.

Montreal’s initiatives aim to offer not just physical warmth but also a sense of security and care to those in need. Joining forces with various organizations, the city continues to work towards finding solutions for the most vulnerable members of the community.
