“Montreal’s ‘Oh My Deer’ Café Launches Unique Raffle to Rebuild Dreams Shattered by Vandalism”

Last month, a startling incident unfolded at Oh My Deer Café in Montreal’s Plateau when an unexpected object crashed through its front window, catching owner Claudia Gamboa off guard.

In a heartfelt Instagram video, Gamboa highlighted the vital role of community backing during tough times, particularly for dedicated small business proprietors like herself.

Recalling the moment of the incident, Gamboa expressed, “When I just opened the door, I’m always worried about the alarm. So I just rush to deactivate the alarm, and then I noticed it was like, ‘What happened?’ I thought at the beginning that it was a gunshot.”

Subsequent examination of camera footage and police inquiry disclosed that the object was likely fired from a BB gun, offering a sense of relief to Gamboa.

Though the motive behind the occurrence remains unclear, one fact stands out: the repair bill totals $1,000.

Reflecting on her challenges, Gamboa shared, “When I reopened two years ago, despite our progress as a young business, it remains tough. Unexpected incidents like this are something I cannot financially bear.”

This unfortunate event isn’t the first setback Gamboa has faced. Earlier this year in July, her café was burglarized, leaving her with heightened feelings of vulnerability.

Expressing her evolving perceptions, Gamboa noted, “I have been in Montreal for 11 years, and this year, I have sensed a change in how I view security here.”

Determined to overcome these setbacks, Gamboa is now orchestrating a community raffle to raise funds for repair expenses and uphold her café — and her aspirations.

Gamboa shared her amazement at the outpouring of support, stating, “The community response has been incredible. It truly astounded me. Everyone shared our post, and I received calls asking, ‘How can I help?’ Other small businesses also contributed. I received tattoo vouchers, food donations, and various services just to support the raffle.”

The raffle draw is scheduled for December 20th, with details available at her café on Des Pins Street or on the Oh My Deer Instagram page.

Buoyed by the community’s solidarity, Gamboa remains optimistic, asserting, “With the community’s backing, I am hopeful that everything will turn out fine. I feel supported and not alone.”
