An Ontario attorney facing extradition for his suspected involvement in a global drug smuggling operation is seeking to impose what he deems as the most rigorous conditions he has encountered throughout his extensive career if granted bail.
Deepak Paradkar is requesting to be confined to 24/7 house arrest, only allowed to leave with one of his designated sureties — his wife and another family member. He intends to surrender all electronic devices except for his wife’s cellphone, to be used solely in her presence and for specific purposes.
Paradkar, among the group of Canadians apprehended in an FBI probe targeting fugitive Ryan Wedding, is also proposing to be placed under GPS monitoring and surrender his passport to the RCMP.
During his bail hearing, Paradkar disclosed that both he and his wife are offering $2.5 million each, which he claims to be almost all of their assets.
U.S. authorities assert that the veteran attorney from Thornhill, Ont., provided counsel to Wedding regarding the killing of a federal witness.
These allegations remain unproven in Canadian courts, which will ultimately decide on the extradition appeals for Paradkar and other implicated Canadians.
