A Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, Constable Ian Solven, is facing dismissal following allegations of making racist and sexist remarks in group chats. In a recent hearing, lawyer John MacLaughlan argued that Solven’s actions have violated the core values of the RCMP and should result in immediate termination or resignation within two weeks.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Solven, along with fellow constables Mersad Mesbah and Philip Dick, engaged in inappropriate behavior by posting discriminatory comments in a group chat and on police computer terminals. The misconduct, which included racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks, was brought to light when a colleague raised concerns about their behavior.
MacLaughlan emphasized the seriousness of Solven’s actions, citing their impact on the RCMP’s reputation and the administration of justice. He expressed that allowing Solven to return to work would be insensitive given the nature of his comments, which denigrated both colleagues and vulnerable members of society.
In his defense, Solven admitted to failing to meet the RCMP’s standards and expressed regret for his behavior. He attributed his actions to personal frustrations and pledged to handle future challenges with integrity and respect.
The adjudication board is set to announce its decision regarding Solven’s employment status on Wednesday. Despite Solven’s apologies and explanations, MacLaughlan stressed the importance of upholding workplace conduct standards, especially in a high-profile organization like the RCMP.
