Transplant Québec and Héma-Québec, two key organizations in Quebec, are in discussions to ensure a smooth merger as outlined in Bill 7, without any negative impact on organ donation processes. Héma-Québec has reassured that the jobs of Transplant Québec staff will be safeguarded throughout the transition period.
In a recent press release, Héma-Québec affirmed that the expertise of the staff will be valued in all proposed models, emphasizing the importance of their contributions.
Both organizations are committed to a fresh start, with an initial meeting already held and ongoing talks to create a mutually beneficial collaboration. Their shared aim is to enhance the organ donation system in Quebec for the benefit of all.
During consultations on Bill 7, Transplant Québec expressed concerns that the merger could potentially compromise the organ donation process, endangering the lives of many individuals annually.
On the other hand, Héma-Québec expressed interest in retaining Transplant Québec’s extensive 55 years of experience in organ donation by potentially integrating it as a subsidiary. This integration would maintain existing practices and management in the short term, as stated by Héma-Québec.
The final decision on the organizational structure is pending, with further discussions planned to explore various partnership scenarios. The government has facilitated these discussions to seek proposals from both entities.
Stakeholders from patient groups and healthcare networks involved in organ donation and transplantation will be actively engaged in the decision-making process.
Ultimately, recommendations will be presented to the Quebec government to steer future actions. Héma-Québec and Transplant Québec anticipate presenting their suggestions to Treasury Board President France-Élaine Duranceau by early 2026.
According to Minister Duranceau’s legislation, funding for Transplant Québec is scheduled to conclude on April 1, 2026.
