Marc Tanguay Steps Back In as Interim Chief of Quebec Liberal Party Amid Leadership Shuffle

The Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) is once again appointing Marc Tanguay as its interim leader while awaiting the selection of a permanent leader. Tanguay, the member of parliament for LaFontaine, previously held this position between the departure of Dominique Anglade in November 2022 and the election of Pablo Rodriguez last June.

President of the PLQ, Rafael P. Ferraro, praised Tanguay as a respected parliamentarian and a recognized leader within the Liberal caucus. Ferraro emphasized Tanguay’s sense of responsibility, stating that he is the right person to ensure stability and steer the Quebec Liberal Party towards a promising future.

Expressing gratitude for the support from his caucus colleagues and the party’s executive council, Tanguay highlighted the need for the PLQ to regain its effectiveness and represent progress. Since 2012, Tanguay has been an active member of the National Assembly.

The appointment of Tanguay as interim leader follows the recent resignation of Rodriguez, who stepped down amid allegations concerning the financing of his leadership campaign. Various investigations, including one by the Permanent Anti-Corruption Unit, have been initiated in response to these allegations.

With the October 2026 elections on the horizon, the PLQ aims to swiftly select a new leader. The party’s executive council is expected to convene in the near future to outline the process for appointing the new leader.
