Paramedics in Quebec to Begin Strike Over Pension Demands
Starting on Christmas Eve, paramedics from nearly 40 ambulance services in Quebec are set to partake in an unlimited strike. These 39 unions, affiliated with the Fédération du préhospitalier du Québec, consist of over 2,000 dedicated paramedics and ambulance technicians throughout the province.
According to union representative Jérémie Corneau-Landry, while paramedics will continue to fulfill their shifts during the strike, there will be certain responsibilities they will decline, such as supervising interns and transporting medical personnel. Despite this, the provision of essential services to the public will remain uninterrupted.
The Quebec labor tribunal has given its approval for the unions’ strike plan, ensuring that crucial services will be sustained and the general populace will not be endangered. Corneau-Landry emphasizes that the primary focus of the workers’ demands revolves around enhancements to their pension plan, with negotiations for a new contract having been ongoing since March.
