Vancouver Island’s Own MP Aaron Gunn Declines BC Conservative Leadership Bid

Vancouver Island MP Aaron Gunn has decided against running for the leadership of the Conservative Party of British Columbia. Concerned about potentially giving the federal Liberals a majority government, Gunn believes his departure could shift the power dynamics in Ottawa. He expressed his reservations about Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strategies to influence MPs and doesn’t want his decision to be misconstrued by the media or the Liberals as a lack of confidence or betrayal towards federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Gunn revealed that despite strong urging from supporters, he has chosen to remain as the MP for North Island — Powell River. While many saw him as a top contender to succeed John Rustad, who recently resigned, Gunn believes his constituents and Canada are best served by his continued presence in Ottawa.

Stressing his commitment to fighting for his constituents and seeking collaboration within British Columbia to strengthen the federal Conservative movement, Gunn made it clear that his decision was not taken lightly. He believes that by staying in his current role, he can make a more significant impact on the issues that matter most to Canadians.
