On Christmas night, North Shore Rescue (NSR) heroes braved snow, wind, and freezing temperatures to rescue a stranded hiker from the top of a mountain while facing avalanche risks.
NSR received a distress call from a lost hiker at St. Mark’s Summit on Cypress Mountain, who admitted to being hypothermic and unprepared for an overnight stay. Volunteers, depicted in dramatic images, trudged through deep snow and monitored avalanche conditions during the challenging rescue mission.
Prior to entering the avalanche-prone area, an Avalanche Operations Plan was meticulously put in place by a Level 2 Avalanche Forecaster, ensuring safety during the operation. Due to low cloud cover, a helicopter rescue was not feasible.
After an intense search, the lost hiker was located at 2 a.m., leading to an overnight effort by the NSR team. By 6:30 a.m., the hiker was successfully rescued, warmed up, and escorted back to the trailhead.
