Firefighters continue to monitor a Markham residence for a second consecutive day following a devastating fire that left a young boy in critical condition.
The tragic incident unfolded at a home on Spragg Circle, located near Ninth Line and 16th Avenue, after emergency services were summoned just after noon on Friday. The nine-year-old boy was discovered inside the residence and swiftly transported to a trauma center with severe injuries. As of Saturday, updates on his condition were not immediately available.
Fortunately, three other individuals who were present in the house during the blaze managed to escape unharmed.
Over the weekend, the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) remained at the site, intensifying their investigation with a particular emphasis on the garage area. While the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, authorities have ruled out any suspicions of foul play.
Jim Demetriou, a spokesperson for the OFM, stated, “We are currently in the investigative phase to ascertain the origin, cause, and circumstances surrounding this incident. Our approach is methodical, and we will be meticulously examining all available evidence, including sifting through debris and pinpointing the starting point.”
Neighbors shared their sympathies for the family affected by the tragedy, noting that the residents were relatively new to the area.
“It’s heartbreaking to see this happen to a family we are just getting to know. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” expressed one neighbor.
Another neighbor added, “Our main concern is the well-being of the boy. Material possessions can be replaced, but the safety and recovery of the child are paramount.”
In light of this distressing event, fire officials stress the importance of homeowners having a clear exit strategy in case of a fire emergency and ensuring that functional smoke detectors are installed throughout their homes.
