Toronto Residents Outraged as Recycling Pickup Delays Continue

Toronto’s newly privatized recycling program is facing challenges just nine days into the new year, with overflowing blue bins causing frustration in North York neighborhoods as pickups are delayed.

Circular Materials, a national non-profit organization, has taken over the coordination of the recycling program from municipalities since January 1. Green For Life (GFL) is now responsible for the curbside collections. However, the transition has not been without issues, leaving residents and officials questioning accountability.

Coun. James Pasternak voiced concerns over the strained resources of GFL and questioned the accountability with multiple entities involved. Mayor Olivia Chow also expressed discontent with the handover of recycling services to private companies, highlighting the lack of control the city now has.

Residents have been vocal about the delays in recycling pickups, emphasizing the inconvenience and impact on their neighborhoods. Circular Materials has assured that efforts are being made to address the backlog and ensure timely collections.

Premier Doug Ford has urged patience during this transition, but has indicated a willingness to make adjustments if the service does not improve.
