Montreal’s New Mayor to Unveil Budget Plan and Priorities
Montreal’s Mayor, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, is gearing up to reveal her administration’s inaugural budget on Monday with a commitment to prudent financial management and enhancing the lives of Montreal residents. The city’s 2026-2035 capital expenditure program will also be introduced alongside this year’s budget during a morning news conference followed by an afternoon presentation.
Martinez Ferrada pledges to trim excessive spending to reallocate resources towards her administration’s key initiatives. These include a significant boost in funding to address homelessness, the revitalization of Montreal’s east end, a municipal hiring freeze, and the reduction of 1,000 non-frontline positions in city hall.
Ensemble Montréal’s financial plan underscores the mayor’s focus on addressing critical issues such as housing, city cleanliness, bureaucratic simplification, and future city preparedness. It acknowledges the financial challenges ahead and the necessity of making tough decisions to ensure fiscal responsibility and debt reduction.
The projected budget aims to save $320 million over Martinez Ferrada’s term and allocate approximately $303 million to fulfill electoral promises. City council is expected to approve the budget by the end of January.
Martinez Ferrada’s predecessor, Valérie Plante, had presented a $7.28 billion budget in late 2024, reflecting a 4.2 percent increase at the time.
