Sûreté du Québec (SQ) investigators in Mauricie are seeking the public’s help in a probe of a fatal collision on Highway 50 early Saturday morning.
A vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Highway 40 caused a head-on collision that claimed the life of a young woman in Trois-Rivières, in the Mauricie region.
“It happened around 3:15 a.m. (Saturday) morning when a vehicle with two men in their twenties on board drove the wrong way onto the highway and caused a head-on collision. Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle traveling legally on Highway 40 died in the head-on collision,” said Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu, spokesperson for SQ.
Investigators said they are seeking witnesses and to identify the occupant(s) of a red and white heavy vehicle. They said they are also seeking to contact the occupant(s) of a snowplow truck transporting snow.
The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. She is a woman in her twenties.
The two men were taken to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries.
“The driver is more seriously injured. The passenger has serious injuries, but they are not life-threatening,” said Beaulieu.
Drunk driving may have been a factor in this head-on collision, which the SQ investigation will have to confirm.
Access to Highway 40 at Boulevard des Récollets, eastbound, was still closed to traffic shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
“The Sûreté du Québec reconstructionist is on site to shed light on the events. It is possible that alcohol was involved, but it is still too early (to confirm),” said Beaulieu.
The SQ investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the SQ’s Criminal Information Center at 1-800-659-4264.
