“Trail Runner Rescued on Christmas Day Turns Hero, Gives Back to Vancouver Community”

Vancouver Trail Runner Shares Harrowing Christmas Day Rescue Tale and the Importance of Outdoor Safety

Shun Ma, an experienced trail runner in Vancouver, found himself in a life-threatening situation on a North Shore mountain this past Christmas Day. What started as a routine training run turned into a harrowing ordeal that tested Ma’s physical and mental strength.

Ma had set out for a quick six-hour run on Cypress Mountain but veered off-trail while trying to make up lost time. Hearing what he thought was a wild animal, he decided to descend quickly, leading him into cliffs and deep snow. After losing his shoe in a creek and realizing he was in danger, Ma made a desperate call to 911 for help.

North Shore Rescue sprang into action, launching a ground operation to locate Ma in the darkness and heavy snow. Despite the physical and mental strain of waiting alone in freezing conditions, Ma was eventually found and rescued around midnight.

Reflecting on the incident, Ma emphasized how even experienced outdoor enthusiasts are not immune to the dangers of nature. He stressed the importance of respecting the mountains and the critical role of volunteer-based emergency services like North Shore Rescue in outdoor safety.

In a show of gratitude and support, Ma donated $3,000 to North Shore Rescue and visited their base with his children to see firsthand the dedication of the volunteers who risk their lives to save others in distress.
