Concerns Rise as Bird Flu Hits Waterfront Communities
A recent discovery along the waterfront in Whitby has raised alarm as dead geese were found to have tested positive for avian influenza, also known as bird flu. Whitby Animal Services confirmed this development in a statement released on Tuesday.
A total of 31 geese have been gathered for testing, with results from the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative confirming the presence of avian influenza. The agency emphasized the importance of monitoring the situation, with Animal Services staff keeping a close watch on the waterfront and its surrounding areas.
Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and report any sightings of sick or deceased birds to Animal Services at 905-655-0283, providing the location for swift response. Additionally, a cautionary reminder has been issued to avoid direct contact with wild birds and to keep pets restrained on a leash to minimize potential exposure.
In a related update, officials in Brampton have also issued a warning following the discovery of several dead waterfowl near local waterways, particularly around Professor’s Lake and Reginald Conover Pond. Avian influenza is suspected as the likely cause of these bird fatalities.
