Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve Borough to Have Weekly Trash Collection During Summer Months
Residents of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve Borough can expect a cleaner environment this summer as the borough announced a switch to a more frequent trash collection schedule. Starting from May 1 to Oct. 31, waste collection will take place weekly, with the schedule reverting to biweekly from Nov. 1 to April 30.
This decision, as per a recent press release, comes as a fulfillment of the borough’s commitment to enhancing cleanliness and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all residents. Mayor Chantal Gagnon expressed her satisfaction in keeping the election promise made by her party, emphasizing the importance of a clean city.
The move to a biweekly garbage collection schedule back in November 2024 had sparked criticism from residents and community groups who complained about streets being cluttered with trash. The outcry prompted mayoral candidates in the last municipal elections to rethink the strategy, ultimately leading to a reversal in the implementation of the biweekly schedule.
In addition to the revised trash collection plan, the borough is now promoting food waste collection and encouraging residents to adopt eco-friendly practices to reduce landfill waste. A detailed collection schedule will be shared to encourage active participation in these initiatives.
