Major Cabinet Shuffle: Jean Boulet Steps Up as New Economy Minister, Charette Takes Helm at Environment

François Legault’s Cabinet Reshuffle: Jean Boulet Takes on Economy and Energy, Benoit Charette Assumes Environment Duties

François Legault, the Premier of Quebec, has made significant changes to his cabinet. In the latest reshuffle, Jean Boulet will now oversee the economy and energy sectors in addition to his current role in labor, while Benoit Charette will be responsible for the environment while continuing to manage infrastructure.

These adjustments were announced after a special cabinet meeting on Monday and are a result of the leadership race within the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party.

As per the rules of the leadership contest, ministers aiming to succeed Legault are required to relinquish their ministerial positions. This led to Christine Fréchette, formerly in charge of economy and energy, and Bernard Drainville, who handled the environment portfolio, stepping down to pursue their leadership campaigns.

Legault had disclosed his decision to step down on January 14, acknowledging Quebecers’ desire for change. He specified that he would resign once a successor was chosen. The new leader of the CAQ, who will effectively become the premier of Quebec, is set to be elected on April 12.
