Business owners and community members in Surrey came together on Sunday to express their concerns about the recent surge of violence that has gripped the Lower Mainland. Since the beginning of the year, Surrey, Delta, and Abbotsford police have been dealing with a spate of extortion-related crimes, some of which have involved shootings at homes and businesses.
The Surrey Police Service has emphasized the importance of refraining from taking justice into one’s own hands and is actively investigating a shooting incident where the occupants of a targeted residence reportedly defended themselves by returning fire.
During the rally on Sunday, residents united to show solidarity in the face of these challenges.
One participant, a Surrey business owner who chose to remain anonymous, shared his experience of being a target of extortion. The bullets fired at his business have not only endangered his livelihood but have also raised concerns about his ability to sustain his financial responsibilities.
Others in the community, even if not directly affected by extortion threats, are feeling the ripple effects of the violence. Kartar Dhillon, a resident whose neighbor was threatened, expressed worries about the safety of his own family and has taken precautions to protect them.
Former Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum attended the rally and highlighted the need for prompt police responses, suggesting the use of a helicopter for improved law enforcement measures.
Additionally, Independent MLA Elenore Sturko and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke have called for the appointment of a national commissioner by Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to address the issue of extortion comprehensively.
Organizer Garry Purewal advocated for legislative changes to empower individuals to better protect themselves, urging the implementation of stand your ground and castle laws for self-defense.
The turnout at the rally gave hope to the community, with individuals like Honveer Randhawa emphasizing the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding extortion and the need for urgent action to ensure public safety.
While the path forward may still be a topic of debate, there is a shared understanding among the community that decisive action is imperative to address the current wave of violence and create a safer environment for all residents.
