Legault Considers Remaining in Politics as MNA Following Tenure as Quebec Premier

François Legault is contemplating staying on as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) past April 12, allowing him to receive a substantial allowance of $300,000. This decision comes after his earlier announcement of resigning as Quebec’s premier once a successor is chosen.

The possibility of Legault remaining as an MNA for L’Assomption until the next general election, which would enable him to receive a severance package equivalent to a year’s salary, is being considered. This development was initially reported by Le Journal de Québec and later confirmed by The Canadian Press.

Agriculture Minister Donald Martel expressed his opinion that there should be specific rules in place for resigning premiers in such situations. At a recent news conference during the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) pre-session caucus, Martel emphasized the importance of making provisions for departing premiers. Martel, who has a longstanding relationship with Legault, expressed a desire for Legault to complete his term, expressing that he would be glad to have him stay on until October.
