Quebec Private Doctors Rebel Against Mandatory Five-Year Stint in Public Healthcare System

In a bold move, Quebec’s private doctors federation is challenging a law that mandates new doctors to work in the public healthcare system for five years. The Fédération des médecins en pratique privée du Québec is seeking a legal intervention against what they claim to be an unjust and discriminatory requirement.

The federation is urging the Superior Court to halt the enforcement of this measure, which they argue unfairly limits doctors’ career choices. Moreover, they are aiming to invalidate certain parts of the law that was implemented in April 2025.

The law was introduced to combat the issue of doctors shifting from the public sector to private practice, with severe penalties imposed on those who breach the five-year commitment by entering private practice or relocating out of the province.

According to the private doctors’ association, this law not only hampers patients’ access to prompt medical care but also disrupts their existing relationships with private healthcare providers.
