A late-night incident at Western University has escalated into a significant police inquiry involving dangerous substances with bomb-making potential.
London, Ontario, authorities responded to a call from the Western University Special Constable Service just after 1:30 a.m. on January 24. The constables had apprehended a trespasser on campus after a short pursuit, where a handgun was discovered.
Further investigation revealed a second individual was connected to the trespassing. This led the police to a residence on Chesham Avenue near Chesham Place, where they uncovered hazardous chemicals capable of being used to create explosives. Two more individuals linked to the property were subsequently arrested.
Jerry Tong (27) from Ottawa is facing multiple firearm-related charges, resisting arrest, break and enter with intent, and unlawful possession of explosives. Zekun Wang (26) from London is charged with break and enter with intent, occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm, and unlawful possession of explosives. Additionally, Fei “Frank” Han (25) and Feiyang “Astrid” Ji (21), both from London, are each charged with unlawful possession of explosives.
It remains unclear if any of the arrested individuals are university students. Police have executed warrants in Ottawa and Gatineau, Quebec, with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, but details about the findings or potential new arrests have not been disclosed.
The investigation involving multiple cities and provinces is ongoing, with the cooperation of various police services.
